Ted is always in the machine shop working on some new project
On the right you will see a thread job from TPG, on the left is an amateur job. Customer had let another company do an "accurizing" job, but it was sub-par. Luckily we were able to convince him to get a completely new barrel blank and let us machine a custom barrel to improve his accuracy. We also blueprinted the factory Remington 700 receiver before turning down the new barrel blank.
Custom Rifles are the heart and soul of why this business was started. We do everything from accurizing, blueprinting, turning barrels from blanks, barrel swaps, and we can even get you set up with a consultation to plan out a custom rifle specific to your needs!
Hello, I am Ted Shore, owner of TPG. I currently reside in Concord, NC, with my wife and 2 sons. This is the story of what led me to start my own business.
I started this journey at the young age of 13 years old. I would shoot at my family farm where I could could reach out to about 600 yards. I had a couple of old rifles, but nothing was as accurate as I would have liked.
The first step to take was to begin hand-loading ammunition and to tune the load specific for each rifle. There was success to be found there, but it was not enough. I wanted to continue my journey of accuracy. Next thing I did would not be very common of a teenager or even a hobbyist. I got a lathe...
From here I researched and researched every forum, YouTube video, and book I could on machining barrels. After a little practice, I ordered my first barrel blank, cut the tenon, chambered it, crowned the muzzle, and attached it to a factory action. It was lights out the most accurate rifle I possessed. I knew right then and there that I was going to turn this into a career.
I later applied to enter the Gunsmithing Program at MCC. It was a 3 year waiting list at the time. So, while I waited, I attended Appalachian State University to obtain a B.S.B.A in Business Management. Once my time at APP was finished, I was finally fortunate enough to chase my dream again at MCC and become a Certified Gunsmith.
I loved every second of the Gunsmithing Program and had my eyes opened to many other aspects of firearms technology. Previously only rifles intrigued me, but I quickly became hooked on handguns. I also began to do some local USPSA and Steel Challenge competitions on the weekends. I graduated from MCC in the summer of 2019.
Not long after graduating it was apparent that I did not have enough industry connection or knowledge of the business side of things. So, I took a job at a retail gun store that also had a range. There was much to learn at that store and on its range. I also got to know some really special people during my time being an employee there. Along the course of almost 4 years, I was slowly able to grow my knowledge, expand my equipment, refine my techniques, and acquire a shop of my own to get started.
I launched TPG at the beginning of 2023 out of my home based shop in Concord and have been pumping out products that I am proud to have my name attached to ever since. It is the only thing that I have ever wanted to do. Today I continue my journey of improving my skills and upgrading my practices to deliver the absolute best work for my customers. Thank you, to everyone who supported me and helped turn this dream into a reality!!!
